All Blacks Take a Shot at Australia's World Cup Schedule (2026)

Imagine a world where the All Blacks, one of the most storied teams in rugby history, have no head coach, no chief executive, and yet they still find the time to take jabs at their Australian rivals. Remarkably, that’s the situation we’re seeing unfold right now in New Zealand Rugby (NZR).

While you or I might expect to have filled these pivotal roles by now, especially with the pressing need for leadership to steer the organization forward, the current state of NZR seems rather stable. Instead of focusing on hiring new executives, the priority this week has shifted to criticizing Australia for scheduling a match against Hong Kong China.

As I reflect on my sports memories, it’s amusing how some details fade while others remain vivid. For instance, I can still recall watching the opening match of the 1987 Rugby World Cup at a friend’s house, but ask me who played in subsequent tournaments, and I draw a blank. This just goes to show that the specifics of opening games often fade in importance over time.

Looking ahead, I find myself more excited about the knockout rounds of the upcoming 2027 Rugby World Cup rather than the initial matches. In this regard, I hold no grudge against Australia and Hong Kong China as they prepare for the tournament opener in Perth; I genuinely hope it turns into a memorable event, and naturally, I’d love to see Australia come out on top. After all, it would be quite embarrassing if the Wallabies didn’t succeed in their own backyard.

Australia has a remarkable history of successfully hosting major sporting events, as seen with the electrifying support during the 2003 Rugby World Cup, which created an incredible festival atmosphere. I fondly remember how the entire Tasmanian community seemed to rally behind either Romania or Namibia when they squared off in Launceston. While Hong Kong China may not evoke the same sentimental support against Australia, their participation will still be met with enthusiasm and celebration.

Ultimately, Rugby World Cups are about triumphs and victories, but it's the smaller nations that really contribute to making it a festival of rugby culture. Booing the scheduling of Australia versus Hong Kong China feels akin to booing Christmas itself—a bit misplaced, wouldn’t you agree? By the time we reach the championship match in Sydney, I doubt anyone will care about the initial kickoff.

Banter between New Zealand and Australia is a cherished tradition, and it’s something we all look forward to. However, timing is everything in sports, and in this instance, the All Blacks’ recent Instagram post—now deleted—didn’t quite hit the mark. With NZR currently lacking key personnel, it feels somewhat out of place for them to critique how another nation manages its affairs. Personally, I would have prioritized hiring essential staff and aiming for victory in the tournament before casting aspersions on another team's readiness to compete. But perhaps that’s just my perspective.

What do you think? Is it fair for a team without defined leadership to question another's schedule? Join the conversation!
