Valente’s path to the U.S. wasn’t his first connection to Brown University. He also attended the same academic program in Portugal as the slain MIT professor, Nuno Loureiro, between 1995 and 2000. The timeline of Valente’s actions leading up to the shootings is both meticulous and chilling. He rented a hotel room in Boston from November 26 to November 30, then a gray Nissan Sentra with Florida plates on December 1. That same day, he drove to the vicinity of Brown University, where his car was spotted intermittently until December 12. The mass shooting occurred on December 13, claiming the lives of two brilliant and beloved students, Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov. Two days later, on December 15, Valente allegedly murdered Loureiro at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Here’s where it gets even more puzzling... After the murder, Valente switched the plates on his rental car to an unregistered Maine plate and drove to a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, where he was found dead. Investigators used security footage, financial records, and rental car data to piece together his movements, but the motive behind his actions remains a mystery. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha admitted, “I don’t think we have any idea why now, or why Brown? Why these students? Why this classroom?”
