Fact-Checking Trump’s Claims on Inflation, Wages, and the Military Dividend (2026)

Fact-checking Trump’s speech on inflation, wages, and a military dividend

In a prime-time White House address, President Donald Trump painted a rosy picture of America's progress, claiming his 11 months in office have brought historic improvements to American lives after years of immigration and economic chaos. However, the reality tells a different story.

Inflation and Wages:
Trump stated, "Inflation has stopped, wages are up, prices are down." But the facts tell a different tale. Inflation hasn't stopped; it remains above the Federal Reserve's target of 2%. Wages have increased, but prices, measured by inflation rates, haven't decreased. The latest data shows a 3% year-over-year price increase in September, which is where it stood when Trump took office.

Drug Prices:
Trump boasted about slashing drug prices by 400-600%. However, such massive price cuts are mathematically impossible. A 100% reduction would mean free medication, a 200% reduction would mean the company pays the consumer, and so on. These claims are unrealistic.

Military Dividend:
Trump announced sending $1,776 checks to 1.45 million U.S. military personnel, a "warrior dividend." The cost of this initiative is $2.58 billion, and it's unclear where the funds will come from. If tariffs remain in place for 2026, they might generate $191 billion in revenue, but this would still require Congress to pass a law, which is unlikely if the checks are already in the mail.

Tax Refunds:
Trump predicted the largest tax refund season ever next spring. Tax refund checks are expected to be substantial in early 2026, with the highest refunds going to high-income households. Tax bills are projected to decrease by $125 billion, or $650 per taxpayer, with higher-income households benefiting more.

Controversial Points:
Trump's speech included exaggerated claims about foreign investment, tax cuts, and immigration. He also stated that crime is at record levels, which is disputed by data showing higher violent crime rates in the 1990s. These points raise questions about the accuracy of his statements and the potential impact on public perception.
