Brace yourself, foldable phone fans: the Galaxy Z TriFold has met its match, and it's not pretty. In a brutal durability test, this ambitious device crumbled under pressure, revealing a significant weakness compared to its predecessor. This is a stark reminder that even with advancements, foldables still have their vulnerabilities.
Unlike the robust Galaxy Z Fold 7, the TriFold didn't fare so well in a stress test designed to push it to its breaking point.
Given the impressive resilience of Samsung's previous foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, expectations were high. However, the TriFold proved that, despite progress, foldable phones are still inherently fragile. The delicate balance of components means they can be surprisingly susceptible to damage.
During a standard durability test by JerryRigEverything, the Galaxy Z TriFold was subjected to scratches, fire, dirt, and, crucially, a bend test. The initial tests revealed expected results: the screen scratched easily, and the glass remained soft.
But here's where it gets controversial... The TriFold struggled with pocket sand, and even relatively large dirt particles caused noticeable grinding and crunching in the hinges. This suggests a vulnerability to everyday environmental hazards.
As for the bend test, the TriFold failed spectacularly. With what seemed like a reasonable amount of force, the screen pixels gave way, and the hinge snapped. This is a critical point of failure, highlighting a major design flaw. While data recovery might be possible, the repair costs would likely be prohibitive.
In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 demonstrated superior durability, surviving a similar bend test with less damage.
And this is the part most people miss... Previous tests, focusing on hinge cycles, showed the Galaxy Z TriFold could withstand up to 150,000 folds without issue. Samsung claims it can handle 200,000 folds. However, these tests don't account for pressure applied in the wrong direction – the TriFold's Achilles' heel. This specific type of stress causes the phone to fold inwards, leading to the catastrophic failure observed in the test. The battery fortunately didn't puncture. However, a new pull tab system showcased a hypothetical situation where thin batteries could bend dangerously when removed.
The Galaxy Z TriFold is expected to launch in early 2026.
