Michael Sheehan, Chief Financial Officer of The Irish Times Group and director of WLR FM, had this to say: "WLR has been a cornerstone of Waterford's media scene for years. This transaction provides an opportunity for the station to embark on a new journey, and I'm confident it will continue to thrive under the DMG Media brand. The staff's dedication has been instrumental in WLR's success, earning it the title of Local Radio Station of the Year five times since 2019."
And this is the part most people miss: The Daily Mail Group, a newcomer to the radio industry, is making a bold move by acquiring WLR FM. Their portfolio includes well-known brands like Evoke, Extra.ie, and OneFabDay.com, as well as print publications like The Irish Daily Mail and The Irish Mail on Sunday.
The Irish Times Group, on the other hand, has a diverse media empire. It publishes The Irish Times, the Irish Examiner, and various Echo titles, along with online platforms like BreakingNews.ie. It also owns property websites like MyHome.ie and has recently expanded into the sports data and memorial notice sectors with acquisitions of ScoreBeo and RIP.ie, respectively.
