MaKayla Lawrence, an 18-year-old Mansfield resident, is set to take the stage at the Miss Ohio Teen pageant, bringing with her a unique blend of talent, determination, and a heartwarming initiative. A Bubbly Personality and a Passion for Performance

This positive outlook has not only earned her the title of "Miss Greater Cleveland's Teen" but has also inspired her community service initiative, "Scene & Heard; a Safe Space for Every Story."
Scene & Heard: A Much-Needed Safe Space
Scene & Heard is a project close to MaKayla's heart, born out of her family's struggles with mental health. After her uncle's passing, MaKayla realized the importance of creating a supportive environment, especially within the performing arts community. She aims to foster an inclusive space where every story is valued and respected, addressing the often-overlooked challenges that performers face behind the scenes.
"The theater community can be a challenging place," MaKayla shares. "People often don't understand the hard work and dedication that goes into each show. It's not just 'fun and games.'" Her initiative seeks to change that narrative, offering a safe space for performers to express themselves and seek support.
A Family Affair: Performing Arts and Mental Health
MaKayla's passion for the performing arts runs deep in her family. As the oldest of three siblings, she has performed in 23 shows at the Renaissance Theatre, a place that has given her countless opportunities. Her mother, Kristal Lawrence, a lifelong singer and actress, has been her biggest inspiration. MaKayla's chosen talent for Miss Ohio Teen is vocal performance, a skill she honed through acting rather than traditional vocal lessons.
"Acting really helped me build up my vocals," MaKayla explains. "It's a strong talent of mine, and I wanted to follow in my mother's footsteps."
The Road to Miss Ohio Teen
MaKayla's journey to the Miss Ohio Teen stage has been a learning experience. After several unsuccessful attempts at pageants, she realized that each loss was a lesson, building her up to the point where she felt confident and ready to win. Her perseverance paid off when she won the Miss Greater Cleveland's Teen title, her first local pageant victory.
"I realized I couldn't beat myself up too hard," MaKayla reflects. "Those attempts were building me up to this point. I knew I was supposed to win this title."
A Bright Future Ahead
As MaKayla prepares for the Miss Ohio Teen Competition, she dreams of a future in the arts, aspiring to become a music producer with a focus on R&B. While she hasn't yet decided on colleges or her post-high school path, her passion and determination are undeniable. With her bubbly personality and talent, she is sure to make a lasting impact, both on stage and in her community.
