Nebraska's 2027 Recruiting Class is Heating Up with a New Offer to a Talented Illinois Defensive Back!
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are making serious waves in the 2027 recruiting landscape, currently boasting the No. 5-ranked recruiting class in the nation and the second-best in the Big Ten, according to 247Sports. On3 also places them at No. 6 nationally and second in the Big Ten, just behind the formidable Ohio State Buckeyes. This impressive class already features one five-star, two four-star, and three three-star prospects, showcasing Nebraska's ability to attract top-tier talent.
But here's where it gets interesting... Nebraska's coaching staff has been actively hitting the recruiting trail, and their latest pursuit has landed them on the radar of Jabarri Lofton, a promising defensive back from East St. Louis High School in Illinois. Lofton recently received a scholarship offer from Nebraska after a conversation with their secondary coach, Addison Williams.
Lofton shared his excitement, stating, “Coach Williams told me about my offer from Nebraska, and that conversation meant a lot to me. He broke down how I fit into their system and made it clear they really believe in me, which really stood out. They are a great program with a lot of tradition and a passionate fan base. I like the direction they’re going and how they develop their players.” This highlights a key aspect of recruiting: not just the offer, but the personalized connection and clear vision for a player's future.
And this is the part most people miss... Lofton's performance on the field speaks volumes. This 6-foot-2, 200-pound athlete had a standout season for the Flyers, racking up 66 tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, and a fumble recovery. He was instrumental in leading his team to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) 6A state championship game, a remarkable achievement that, despite a tough 38-28 loss, Lofton views as a valuable learning experience. “The season went really well overall. Finishing 9–4 and making it to the state championship was big for our program. Losing that game hurt, but it taught me a lot and showed what we’re capable of. It definitely pushed me to work even harder moving forward,” he explained.
Lofton's recruiting journey has been a steady climb, beginning with his first offer from Sacramento State last May. He now holds offers from a strong list of programs including Michigan State, Kansas State, Purdue, Washington State, Toledo, Missouri, Memphis, Miami (FL), Illinois, Kentucky, Florida State, Arizona State, Kansas, and Missouri State, in addition to Nebraska.
“The recruiting process has been a blessing. I’m thankful for every opportunity and every coach who believes in me. I’m just staying patient, trusting God, and taking everything one step at a time,” Lofton commented, showcasing a mature and grounded approach to his future.
Currently rated an 87 overall and a three-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite, Lofton is ranked No. 586 nationally, No. 56 as a safety, and No. 20 in Illinois. He plans to embark on several visits soon to further explore his options and build relationships with different coaching staffs.
“I have some Junior Days and visits planned. I am looking forward to getting on campuses to see which places feel like home, since I’m still hearing from a lot of schools and building relationships with coaches. But, right now, I’m keeping an open mind and not rushing anything. When it comes time to commit, I will be looking for a program that feels like family and develops players on and off the field,” Lofton elaborated. This emphasis on a "family feel" and holistic player development is a crucial factor for many recruits.
