Nicklas Backstrom's Home in Northern Virginia Sells for $11 Million
The sale of Nicklas Backstrom's home marks the end of his ties to the Washington DC area. The 16,000-square-foot mansion in Northern Virginia was sold for $11 million last week, after being listed for sale in April 2025. The property was initially priced at $14.99 million, but the price was lowered to $11.9 million in July.
The listing agents, Sherif Abdalla and Ali Alasgar Farhadov of Compass, described the sale as a notable one, not only due to the high price but also because of the seller's identity. Abdalla noted the bittersweet nature of the sale, as it signifies the end of the Backstrom family's chapter in the area.
Backstrom purchased the home in 2021, shortly after its construction, for $8.5 million. The 7-bedroom, 12-bathroom residence features a range of amenities, including a sauna and steam room, a movie theater, a bar, a gym, an elevator, and six fireplaces. An integrated speaker system is also installed throughout the property.
This sale comes as Backstrom, his wife, and their three children have been residing in Sweden since the summer. The 38-year-old hockey player signed a one-year contract with an option for a second year with Brynäs IF, his hometown team in the SHL, in late July. Backstrom has been playing for the Capitals and is the team's all-time leader in assists.
Backstrom also owns a luxury villa in Gävle, Sweden, which he built in 2010. Brynäs plays its home games at Monitor ERP Arena in Gävle. The team has struggled this season, currently sitting 10th out of 14 teams in the SHL standings with a 16-16-3 record.
