Seattle Light Rail Shutdown: Capitol Hill to Stadium! (Dec 20-21, 2025) (2026)

Attention, Seattle commuters! A temporary disruption is coming to your light rail service, but don't worry, we've got the details to keep you informed and on the move. The Link light rail will be paused overnight between Capitol Hill and Stadium stations, but here's the catch: it's all for a good cause!

Sound Transit is working hard to upgrade the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel with advanced signaling, a move that will enhance the efficiency and safety of your daily commute. But here's where it gets controversial: this upgrade will cause a brief suspension of service from 11 p.m. on Saturday until 10 a.m. on Sunday. So, what does this mean for you, the rider?

During this time, buses will step in to replace the 1 Line trains, adding approximately 30 minutes to your usual travel time. However, Sound Transit assures us that the 1 Line trains will maintain their regular service hours, operating every 15 minutes between Lynnwood and Capitol Hill, and every 10-15 minutes between Stadium and Federal Way. Additionally, Sound Transit shuttle buses will run every 10-15 minutes between Capitol Hill and Stadium, stopping at all the intermediate stations to ensure a seamless connection.

These shuttle buses will operate within Link's usual hours, running from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday and from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. So, while there may be a slight inconvenience, Sound Transit is committed to keeping your commute as smooth as possible.

And this is the part most people miss: these upgrades are essential for the long-term improvement of our public transport system. While it may cause a temporary disruption, it's a small price to pay for a more efficient and reliable light rail service in the future. So, the next time you hop on the Link, remember the sacrifices made during this overnight suspension!

Sound Transit advises passengers to plan their journeys accordingly. But what do you think? Is this a necessary evil, or could there be a better way to manage these upgrades? Let us know in the comments; we'd love to hear your thoughts on this temporary disruption to your daily routine!
