This announcement comes amidst the backdrop of the EU's decision to potentially ease its own deadlines for phasing out new combustion engine vehicles. While the UK government has stated it won't weaken its commitment to ban the sale of new petrol or diesel cars by 2035, the accelerated review suggests a dynamic approach to achieving this goal.
Back in April, the UK hinted at softening its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate – designed to push carmakers to sell more EVs annually or face hefty fines. This followed lobbying from the car industry, which argued the initial rules were economically unsustainable. The government responded by introducing "flexibilities," such as offering more credits for selling hybrid vehicles.
Industry Minister Chris McDonald confirmed the review's timing, stating the government aims to complete it swiftly. He emphasized the need to be responsible to the industry and responsive to market trends.
This news emerged during McDonald's visit to Nissan's Sunderland factory, where the latest electric car production has begun. The launch of the third-generation Leaf, a pioneering mass-market EV built in the UK, is seen as crucial for the industry's transition. Nissan has already produced over 280,000 Leaf models at this factory, the largest in Britain.
EV sales have surged in recent years, accounting for over a fifth of the UK market in July. However, carmakers previously overestimated EV demand, leading to price adjustments to attract buyers.

The EU's recent move to relax its zero-emission requirements, allowing for a 10% allowance for plug-in hybrids or even combustion engine vehicles after 2035, highlights the complexities of this transition.
